The Tale of Genji

After going through the reading, this story's narrative revolves around Genji's life, his numerous romantic escapades, and his experiences at the Imperial court. Genji's was a guy that fell in love when he was very young. Genji's mother, Lady Kiritsubo, is a beloved concubine of the Emperor, and she indeed gives birth to him. However, Lady Kiritsubo faces jealousy and discrimination from the other women at court due to her low status, and she dies not long after giving birth to Genji. The moment she died, he fell in shock about the situation.


The novel follows Genji's life as he grows into a charming and accomplished young man and enters the complex world of the Heian court, filled with political intrigue, love affairs, and cultural refinement. Throughout the novel, Genji has a series of romantic encounters and relationships with various women, exploring themes of love, beauty, and the passage of time. However, Genji has the power that he can do whatever he wants without any approval. No everyone can do what he can do so he was using that power to take advantage of everyone in the society.

  1. Do you think he was abusing his power at some point? It kind of reminds me of pretty privilege because all these other women would have let him do anything to them because of his looks and high rank.

  2. Yes, I think that, at some point, he is abusing his power. But also, I agree with your point that some women would let him do anything to them because of his looks and high rank, then those women, later on, can say that they were with him; maybe those ladies feel good by saying that at some point they both have an engagement with Genji.
